SPELAND vs Grodan: Stone Wool Substrate Comparison

A grower-focused comparison of the leading stone wool brands in the professional horticulture market.

Grodan (ROCKWOOL Group, Denmark/Netherlands) has been the dominant brand in professional horticultural stone wool for decades. It's the benchmark against which every other stone wool product is measured. SPELAND, produced by TechnoNikol (Russia's largest mineral wool manufacturer) and distributed by Vator LLC, is one of the most compelling alternatives — particularly for growers in the CIS, Middle East, and Asian markets.

This comparison is written from a grower and distributor perspective. We represent SPELAND, so we acknowledge our bias — but we'll give you the honest picture.

At the fundamental material science level, SPELAND and Grodan are the same product: inorganic basalt-based stone wool spun at high temperature. The core performance properties are essentially identical.

Where They Differ

Smart Sensor Technology (Grodan Advantage)

Grodan's GroSens system integrates moisture and EC sensors directly into slabs, connected to a data management platform. This gives real-time root zone monitoring without external probes. SPELAND does not currently have an equivalent product. For large high-tech operations that have invested in precision growing, GroSens is a genuine advantage.

Product Range (Slight Grodan Advantage)

Grodan's product range is more extensive, with multiple density variants and format options within each crop category. SPELAND's five product lines (Base, Mid, Vega, Micro Green, Floret) cover the major crop types but with less granularity in density options.

Price (SPELAND Advantage)

This is the most significant difference. SPELAND substrates are priced 30–50% below comparable Grodan products at CIF destination in most markets. The price difference reflects manufacturing location and margin structure, not material quality.

For a 10,000 m² tomato greenhouse, the substrate cost difference over a season can exceed €15,000–25,000 — a meaningful contribution to farm economics.

Logistics and Lead Times (Market-Dependent)

In the Netherlands, Belgium, and most of Western Europe, Grodan has well-developed distribution with short lead times. In Russia, CIS, Middle East, and parts of Asia, SPELAND sourced through Vator LLC offers significantly shorter supply chains and lower freight costs compared to Grodan shipped from the Netherlands.

Technical Support

Grodan has an extensive global agronomic support network. Vator LLC provides technical support for SPELAND users, including agronomist consultation for substrate selection, EC/pH protocol development, and troubleshooting. For most commercial applications, this level of support is sufficient.

When to Choose SPELAND

When Grodan May Be Preferable

Switching from Grodan to SPELAND

Many growers make the switch. The process is straightforward because the core material properties are equivalent:

Growers who have switched to SPELAND from Grodan consistently report equivalent crop performance — with the difference going directly to their margin.
